Overview

This book explores the economic viability of small farms in marginal regions, with a particular focus on mountainous, submontane and High Nature Value (HNV) areas in Bulgaria. Although small farms play a key role in sustaining rural communities, cultural landscapes and biodiversity, their economic performance is often evaluated through conventional indicators that overlook territorial and structural constraints. The book develops a multidimensional framework for assessing Farm Economic Viability (FEV), combining quantitative analysis based on Farm Accountancy Data Network (FADN) data with qualitative insights into farmers' strategies and motivations. The findings reveal considerable diversity among small farms in marginal areas and demonstrate that economic viability cannot be reduced to farm size or productivity alone. By situating the Bulgarian case within the broader European context, the book contributes to current debates on the future of small-scale farming, rural resilience and the role of agricultural policy in supporting sustainable farming systems.
