A fotossíntese representa a base da produtividade primária global, sendo um processo de oxirredução onde a água é oxidada e o dióxido de carbono é reduzido para formar carboidratos. Nos cloroplastos, a energia luminosa é capturada por complexos de pigmentos-proteínas organizados em fotossistemas (PSII e PSI). A absorção de fótons promove elétrons a estados excitados, iniciando uma cadeia de transporte eletrônico na membrana do tilacoide. A fotólise da água, ocorrendo no complexo de evolução de oxigênio do PSII, fornece elétrons para recompor o sistema, liberando prótons no lúmen.
