Eagle Bulletin, January 2004 This collaborative work, with its vision of eco-industrial parks , introduces a concept still largely in its infancy: linking manufacturers in an industrial ecosystem where economic and environmental excellence can flourish. UNEP Industry and Environment, Oct-Dec 2003 This book is the first to pool together resources and knowledge from a wide array of sources within the eco-industrial field. Warmer Bulletin, January 2004 Edward Cohen-Rosenthal, Director of the Work and Environment Initiative at the Cornell Center for the Environment in Ithaca, New York died in 2002. His book Eco-industrial Strategies: Unleashing Synergy between Economic Development and the Environment was published posthumously. He describes eco-industrial development as a subset of sustainable development, an area in which he suggests the role of industry is given short shrift. Yet industry in each transaction - every purchase and sale - influences the larger commons. Each decision on what materials and energy to use and how to use them is a pixel in the picture of industry's contribution to environmental problems or to their resolution. Jim Ireland of Erin Consulting, Regina, Saskatchewan, has been involved in ecopark implementation and reviewed this book for the Gallon Environment Letter. -- Review by J. C. Ireland, Erin Consulting Ltd: Review by J. C. Ireland, Erin Consulting Ltd: This book is an excellent guide for the practitioner of eco-industrial networking (EIN). It is divided into four parts which can be summarized as an overview of eco-industrial networking or eco-industrial development, as it is referred to in the USA. Followed by a section on stakeholder involvement, including governments', communities' and developers' roles in EIN, a section on issues in EIN, ranging from legal issues to management to real estate values, and lastly a series of nine case studies from around the world. Although some of the sections, particularly the legal aspects are weighted to the USA, this book is a major source of practical application of industrial ecology particularly for EIN practitioners. Of particular note is the emphasis placed on the soft side of EIN. The role and importance of people and understanding of EIN is a great strength in an outstanding review of EIN. The book includes chapters by the leading academics and practitioners of EIN, particularly focussing on eco-industrial park design. These couple with the chapters written by Ed Cohen-Rosenthal to provide an invaluable compendium of current thought on EIN. The leadership of Ed Cohen-Rosenthal in EIN is clearly seen in the chapters that he wrote himself. With his passing we have lost one of the very best minds in industrial ecology and we are fortunate to have this book that presents his ideas and thoughts so clearly. -- Jim Ireland, ERIN Environmental Consulting Specialists Readers ... will find this book immensely inspiring and innovative.
