Echoes and Embers: Speculative Stories

Overview

Longlisted for the BSFA Award When a precocious Guardian in Sector Z in New Inku'lulu-an elite space outpost-misuses her sound magic, the Guardians punish her by stripping away her magical ability. Chant'L is exiled to Savage Mound, a sound island on planet Wiimb-ó. She discovers that magic is inborn, never truly lost or taken, and summons the Nga'phandileh, creatures of unreality. But her magic is more than she bargained for. Now the Guardians in Sector Z find themselves with a massive catastrophe they must not only keep secret, but resolve. A science fiction horror from an award-winning queen of Afro-Irreal genre bending. A glossary of Bantu, Afrocentric and authorly-crafted words complements this genre-bending, cross-cultural novella. Something beautiful, something dark in lyrical language packed with affection, dread, anguish and hope. From Bram Stoker Award winner Pedro Iniguez, Echoes and Embers: Speculative Stories weaves fantasy and science fiction, Latinx themes, and traditional pulp stylings. This book collects 21 tales of outsiders, explorers, renegades, and dreamers as they navigate the mysteries and perils of the vast sandbox that is the universe. Some of the stories you'll read: A boy and his grandmother witness the spectacle of a magical lucha libre match; amidst the Robot Apocalypse, an expectant mother's only hope for survival may just be a robot; a convict finds himself torn asunder and reassembled into a facsimile as he is teleported to a distant battlefield; plagued by ghosts, a young girl finds the source of her hauntings may be tied to time travel; after the Earth is destroyed, three astronauts stranded on Mars may hold the key to humanity's future. From magical realism to military science fiction, Lovecraftian cyberpunk yarns to swashbuckling tales in space, this collection spans the frontiers of the imagination and the vastness of the cosmos.

Reviews

""ECHOES AND EMBERS is filled with transmissions from both the future and the past, stories that are tender, beautifully strange, ancestral, cosmic, adventurous, yet mixed with the horrific and the folkloric in settings both familiar and far reaching into space-perfect for readers who want to be both transported yet grounded."" -Ai Jiang, Nebula and Bram Stoker Award-winning author of Linghun ""ECHOES AND EMBERS is a compelling collection of stories that showcase great emotional range and extreme depth. At times gentle, brutal, hilarious, heartbreaking, and delightful. Pedro Iniguez spins real magic here!"" -Jonathan Maberry, NY Times bestselling author of BURN TO SHINE and NECROTEK ""Pedro Iniguez writes himself true in Echoes and Embers, to telegraph dreams, murmurs and regrets in unassuming stories enshrouded with ghosts, star falls and space ways. As the ravishing song of the mythical kipi-kua creature flames the atomic embers of hope, new chances and transcendence, distantly familiar characters reposit themselves into intimate lives we get to spend time with in the arresting paso doble of Latino-infused text."" -Eugen Bacon, British Fantasy Award winner and Philip K. Dick Award finalist ""In tales that are as likely to touch your heart as they are to dazzle or horrify, Pedro Iniguez displays his storytelling prowess and passion for crafting worlds that are anchored to characters that feel deeply real and painfully human."" -E.G. Condé, Author of Sordidez, International Latino Book Award Winner, Ignyte Award Finalist, Indie Ink Award Finalist With Echoes and Embers, Pedro Íñiguez cements his place as one of the leading writers of Mexican American futurism. -David Bowles, award-winning author of The Witch Owl Parliament and The Prince & the Coyote ""As the father of Chicano Science Fiction, it was a pleasure to read Pedro Iniguez's Echoes and Embers. These imaginative adventures crossing borders from Xicanx viewpoints, show his mastery of the speculative genre, and are perfect for getting fans from all backgrounds of media franchises excited about reading."" -Ernest Hogan, author of High Aztech and Cortez on Jupiter
