Reviews

One of four in the Easy Cookbooks for Kids series, this edition features main dish recipes from eleven countries around the world suitable for beginning cooks. A brief introduction encourages youngsters to explore different cultures through foods, a common denominator that unites people of all origins. Succeeding chapters discuss cooking safety techniques, cooking tips and tricks like planning ahead and making accurate measurements, defining cooking terms such as chopping, mincing and simmering, illustrating cooking tools and utensils with color photos, presenting the USDA MyPyramid to encourage nutrition and providing a conversion chart for measurements. The remaining eleven chapters present recipes from as many countries including sweet and sour shrimp from China, taco de pescado from Mexico and psari spetsiotiko from Greece. Each recipe includes a brief discussion about that country including a small map, a brief description of the dish, utensils and ingredients needed and step-by-step instructions for preparation. The dishes are simple enough for beginning cooks with some adult supervision, as suggested. Color photos and boxed suggestions or ideas add interest. It is a nice variety of dishes with just enough new ingredients to interest youngsters. Suggestions for further reading and an index are included., Children's Literature
