After graduating from Leningrad University (now St. Petersburg), as Persian bibliographer at the Oriental Institute he published catalogues and studies of Persian dictionaries until his emigration to the US in 1993. He lives in retirement in Minnesota. John Perry was born in the UK in 1942 and took a PhD in Arabic and Persian from Cambridge. Since 1973 he has taught Persian and Tajik at the University of Chicago. Alexander Vovin, Professor of East Asian Languages at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, has published extensively, including some hundred articles, on Japanese, Ainu, Korean and Tungusic, as well as other languages of East and Inner Asia. Among his major works are A Reconstruction of Proto-Ainu (Brill, 1993), A Reference Grammar of Classical Japanese Prose (RoutledgeCurzon, 2003) and Nihongo Keitoron no Genzai/ Perspectives on the Origins of the Japanese Language (a bilingual Japanese-English volume co-edited with Osada Toshiki, the International Center for Japanese Studies, Kyoto, 2003).
