The above quote aptly captures the essence of Flow which is motivated primarily by the experience itself rather than by the extrinsic rewards attached to it. Flow needs no external goalsto sustain itself. The state of Flow is an attribute of experiential living, unaffected by nature of task. It manifests in the being of the individual who experiences timelessness and wholeness while in the state of flow. Csikszentmihalyi (1975) developed the idea of flow for understanding the experience of enjoyment and absorption in a task, which is isolated from past or future influences.Observing artists', Csikszentmihalyi found that their work was characterized by a strong involvement in their activity, which could be described as enthralling and a trance like state. Artists' disclosed that they were not driven to complete their work to satisfy any external need, rather they were impelled by the enjoyment in the activity. These experiences diminished as soon as their work was finished. Csikszentmihalyi (1975) determined that the activity was self-sufficient and became complete in itself with no need for any added rewards. Flow thus signifies the sensation of wholenessfelt when we act with complete involvement. While flow is often experienced in play, in creativity, or in religious ecstasy, it is not always present in these activities, nor is it limited to them.
