I distract her by telling her about one of the worst falls I had in my youth. A nasty bump with a laceration on my ribs. The anecdote, that I fainted three times at the mention of a needle to sew my arms back together, seems to amuse her greatly. After a moment, her nose wrinkles and she finally manages to articulate a sentence: ""It stinks... we stink,"" she explains. I sniff and realize the ambient odor surrounding us.
