Dunking at 35: A Guide for Practitioners

Overview

Have you always wanted to dunk a basketball? Do you think, in your 30s, that it's time to move on? Here is a story and a guide that will change your mind. 15 years after a catastrophic knee injury, I returned to the court to pursue the singular athletic goal of all middle-aged men who once played high school basketball: dunking. This book is part memoir, part training guide, part physics tutorial. Above all it is a targeted and scientific approach for dunking a basketball. We'll cover my journey, weight room routines, Newton's laws of motion, and much more. If you want to dunk in your 30s and are frustrated by the lack of material for athletes past their prime playing days, get this book. Part 1 covers the science. The necessary equations you need to have imprinted on your brain in order for your training to be effective. You don't need to have a PhD, but you need to be comfortable with high school physics. Part II covers strength training. In particular, which lifts translate best into jumping ability. Part III gets into plyometrics and, often overlooked, the skill of jumping. Finally, the book finishes with a series of short essays that detail my meandering journey and highlights mistakes I've made (and which you can learn from). All throughout, you'll recognize a common theme: for those in our 30s or later, the popular jump programs are ineffective at best and dangerous at worst. Those with an office job and a young family, such as myself, do not compare at all to teenagers who sleep 10 hours a day. The training, obviously, should be different as well. That's why I wrote this book. I'm 6' 1"" with limited natural bounce. If I can dunk, so can you. Read it, work hard, accomplish your dreams.
