OverviewThis is an examination of Sasanian Zoroastrianism. The Sasanian period was a crucial time in the formation of several great religious traditions of the Near East - Judaism, Christianity, Manicheasim - and in laying the foundations for the emergence of Islam. It examines the great diversity of doctrine, myth and perhaps also practice in Sasanian religion. He concludes that, though it had its limitations as a viable religion, satisfying the yearnings of people looking for the ultimate religious truth, its survival to the present day in Iran indicates a certain resilience, and that Islam may have derived some of its mystical fervour from it.
