"Following an exhibition sharing the same title and also organised by Jean-Franois Blanchette at the Canadian Museum of History (then the Canadian Museum of Civilisation in Gatineau, Qubec) in 2008-2009, this iteration of Du coq l'me: L'art populaire au Qubec is a welcome scholarly addition and cultural counterpoint to the often Anglo-centric narrative of North American folk art. Blanchette's title, a play on the French expression ""du coq l'me"" (literally ""from the rooster to the donkey"" but denoting that which passes from one thing to another), recalls the diverse variety and quality of Qubec-made pieces held in public and private Canadian collections. Among the volume's greatest contributions is its comprehensive treatment of the visionary Canadian folk art connoisseur Nettie Covey Sharpe. Blanchette's volume is to be commended for reinserting Qubec within a wider art historical, ethnographic, and cultural framework that underscores the complexity and nuance of its folk traditions. It is further enhanced by a stellar bibliography and a useful chronology of relevant exhibitions held from 1974 to 2014. Strongest in its analysis and presentation of Qubec folk art of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, Du coq l'me: L'art populaire au Qubec is a valuable complement to the original 2008--2009 exhibition. A testament to Blanchette's continuing scholarship and curatorial expertise, it further underscores the significance of the Canadian Museum of History as a repository and centre for the study of Qubec's historic and living artistic heritage.-- ""PUO-UOP"""

"Du coq l'me n'est pas seulement un ouvrage stimulant, c'est aussi un plaisir pour l'oeil grce ses dizaines d'illustrations couleur allant des tapis crochets aux motifs traditionnels jusqu'aux tableaux en coquilles d'oeufs de Jacqueline Tremblay et aux bonhommes danseurs d'Elphge Valois. Un vritable coffre aux trsors!-- ""PUO-UOP"" Following an exhibition sharing the same title and also organised by Jean-Franois Blanchette at the Canadian Museum of History (then the Canadian Museum of Civilisation in Gatineau, Qubec) in 2008-2009, this iteration of Du coq l'me: L'art populaire au Qubec is a welcome scholarly addition and cultural counterpoint to the often Anglo-centric narrative of North American folk art. (...) Jean-Franois Blanchette valorise l'art traditionnel et ses artisans, qui n'ont pas toujours de place dans nos muses. Son livre utilise un langage clair et s'adresse un large public.-- ""PUO-UOP"""
