Overview

Drying is a predominant unit process found in biotechnology, ceramic, chemical, agricultural, mineral processing, polymer, food, pharmaceutical, coal processing, textile, wood processing, pulp and paper industries. Drying of an object is required for varied reasons viz., preservation and efficient long-term storage of goods, reduces freight transport costs by lowering its size and weight, eases handling of an object by transforming it into free-flowing solids and anticipated quality of an object can be attained. Generally, drying implies removal of moisture thermally from a wet object. Vaporisation of surface moisture by ambient hot air and transport of internal moisture in object to its surface are two simultaneous processes that takes place during drying. Former one primarily be influenced by external conditions of drying medium viz., temperature. velocity, relative humidity and pressure and of product viz., thickness, area and shape of object exposed to air. While the latter one is a function of drying object such as material properties, moisture content and temperature.
