Overview

This well established text offers an unrivalled introduction to the use of drugs in psychiatry, looking at both general principles and specific clinical applications. The fifth edition has been fully revised to take in the ever-increasing range of drugs available and new research developments. It provides a framework of current scientific knowledge on which to base sound practical prescribing. Beginning with an account of the historical background and the scientific basis of the subject, Drug Treatment in Psychiatry includes chapters on contemporary treatment for various diagnostic categories: schizophrenia, affective and anxiety disorders, organic psychiatric syndromes, personality problems, substance-related disorders, sleep disorders, and eating disorders. Each chapter begins with a discussion of the physiological and biochemical abnormalities underlying the condition to be treated, followed by a section on the pharmacology of the appropriate drugs. The final section, which has been revised to include new drugs, deals with their clinical application and gives practical advice on the most suitable preparations for treatment. Trevor Silverstone is Professor Emeritus of Clinical Psychopharmacology at the Medical College of St. Bartholomew's Hospital, University of London. He is also currently Professorial Research Fellow in the Department of Psychological Medicine, University of Otago Medical School, New Zealand where he is Director of the Psychopharmacology Research Group. Paul Turner CBE is Professor Emeritus of Clinical Pharmacology at the Medical College of St Bartholomew's Hospital, University of London.
