Overview

Published posthumously as Dreams, Styrsky 's dream journal spanning the interwar years comprises prose, sketches, collages, and paintings. The present volume includes the complete series based on Styrsk 's layout for its publication, his sole volume of poetry (also published posthumously), as well as a selection of his essays, lectures, manifestos, and other text fragments. This edition presents in English for the first time the broad range of Styrsk 's contribution to the interwar avant-garde and Surrealism.

Reviews

It would be futile to look for any concessions to what's in vogue or to outside pressures in Styrsk 's work. The occupation and war have not diverted him from his path, which is at one with the path of revolution. -- Benjamin P ret

Author Information

"Jindřich Styrský (1899-1942) was a painter, poet, editor, photographer, and collagist. His outstanding and varied oeuvre included numerous book covers and illustrations. He also wrote studies of both Rimbaud and Marquis de Sade. A member of Devetsil, he participated in their group exhibitions and in 1928-29 was director of the group's drama wing, the ""Liberated Theater."" In addition to his Edition 69 series, Styrský also edited the Erotic Review, which he launched in 1930, and Odeon, where many of his shorter texts appeared. He was a founding member of the Surrealist Group of Czechoslovakia."
