Her books have won the Commonwealth Writers' Prize, Hurston/Wright Legacy Award, the Women's Prize for Fiction ""Best of the Best"" award, and the National Book Critics Circle Award, as well as being finalist for other honors. She also authored Mama's Sleeping Scarf, a children's book, written under the name Nwa Grace-James. She grew up in Nigeria and is a recipient of a 2008 MacArthur Foundation Fellowship.
