OverviewDrafting for the Theatre offers detailed, comprehensive instruction in the development of the drafting skills required of stage designers and technicians. Intended as the fundamental step in the education of theatre technicians and lighting/scenery designers as well as a reference for experienced drafters, the text demonstrates the integration of drafting skills with sound stagecraft applications. Dorn and Shanda also emphasize the standard drafting and designing practices of the theatre industry through a series of projects and practical exercises that further help the student in the development of research skills. In the early sessions, Dorn and Shanda focus on the basics of lettering, tool introduction, geometric constructions, orthographic techniques, soft-line sketching applications, and dimensioning and notation skills. After several weeks the student begins to apply these drafting skills to design and technical theatre. At this point, the projects in the text expand to include ancillary skills such as time and material estimation, shop drawing nomenclature, and techniques such as simplified drafting pin graphics, theatre drafting standards, and CADD processes. The text concludes with a final project that will help the student develop a portfolio set of drawings. This process-oriented text - supplemented by 257 illustrations - has been carefully prepared for a college semester of approximately fifteen weeks, with classes running at least two hours and meeting two to three times a week. It is structured to provide students with a proper and practical approach to the development of drafting and related skills for the theatre. Students who have completed this text should possess thenecessary skills to function successfully as entry-level assistants to a technical director or set designer working in an academic environment.
