Table of ContentsReviewsAuthor InformationAuthor Vicki Schmidt's days are filled with writing, cartography, gardens, horses, and the fire service. At her farm in the western Maine foothills, she raises Shire draft horses for work, sport, and show. Her farm blossoms with greenhouses, gardens, fields, and forest. Born in California, her parents arrived back in Maine to their family homestead when Vicki was six years old. She has lived in Maine ever since but travels nationally and internationally for teaching and training with horses, the fire service, and her cartography career. While attending college part time, Vicki spent a decade working for an equine vet and solidified her ambitions with horses. An accomplished draft horse breeder and trainer for over twenty years, Vicki is known for her writings in trade journals and magazines such as Farming, the Journal of Northeast Agriculture, and Rural Heritage. As a volunteer firefighter and fire instructor her writings reinforce safety and accident prevention. A work-from-home career allowed Vicki to become an accomplished cartographer and GIS professional for state and national environmental and fire service programs.
