Overview

In Down the Monster Hole or Don't Be Afraid I'm Only a Child, a child's journey through a fictional maze full of wonders and challenges turns into a mind-expanding search for meaning. Tom, a runaway, clashes with a gang of wicked clocks and loses his way and his sense of time. After wandering around and making new friends, Tom finds himself alone in a cemetery for machines. There, amid the junk of the mechanical remains, he discovers a hidden kingdom of monsters and puzzles, which pique his curiosity. As Tom travels from adventure to adventure and from one challenge to another, clues to the meaning of his quest unfold. At last, he meets Seven, a pretty flower- maiden, in a magical garden Seven and her flowery maidens cheer Tom up with their early morning chanting in motion. They brighten his journey with a spark of enlightenment and good advice. At the end of the maze, he learns that who and what he imagined the ""King of All Monsters"" to be is none other than a representative of law and order. Tom also realizes that if one wishes to find his way through the ""Law and Order"" maze, he must first master his own skills of self-discipline. This realization helps Tom find his way to the world where he belongs and his path back home.

Reviews

Carmela Tai Baron's lyrical narrative, magical imagery, and positive messages engaged me throughout. .. an action-packed series of adven-tures that never disappoint... Tom (the protagonist) learns that everyone has hidden gifts, that love knows no bounds of appearance, and that things are hardly ever what they seem. This talented author is also a visual artist and created the book's illustrations ... playful, colorful, and match the book's themes... a children's fantasy adventure that parents and kids will both adore. - Eva Darrington, Online Book Club and Amazon Curious and curiouser, while commonly used to describe Alice's wonder-land, could also be a phrase to describe this fanciful book. As in Alice in Wonderland, the outlandish but interesting characters don't always talk in a straightforward manner. Even so, I nodded my head at some of the wisdom being put forth by this motley crew ... I was in awe of all the scenes she (the author) came up with ... the world building that she did and the puzzles that she created. Throughout the book were pictures ( drawn by the author) that heightened the sense of wonder. - Trina High, Online Book Club and Amazon An elegantly written and illustrated classic! A true gift to book lovers of all stripes whose sense of wonder and daring never dies. Down the Monster Hole I went with Tom, the protagonist, and joined his caravan of dreams (still smiling). Laced with inspiration, chuckles and nuances, the prose will be uniquely interpreted by each reader-believer. And what a clever and life-enhancing ending: It was just a game! The end is another beginning. I highly ecommend this book for all ages. - Mary Ann Place, Amazon
