OverviewDonegal is the most northerly county in Ireland and one of the largest. In this photographic collection, the reader will find over 200 images depicting life in the county from 1880s onwards. The pictures here feature all corners of Donegal from Malin Head in the north to Glencolmcille in the south and the Irish language-speaking areas such as the Rosses and Gweedore in the west, bordered by the stunning seascapes of the Atlantic Ocean. Inland there are thriving small towns and picturesque villages set amid a rugged and dramatic landscape that has an enduring appeal. The photographs have been selected from public collections, the archives of professional photographers and from private sources. Most have never been published before. Together they stand as a record of the lives of Donegal's inhabitants, their working conditions, social life and culture. They provide an insight into life in the county over the past century or so, and will evoke cherished memories of a bygone era.
