OverviewDoes God exist? Some people, like Dr. William Lane Craig, believe that there are solid reasons to believe in God, and during the course of this 2009 debate at Biola University he outlines those arguments. Christopher Hitchens, on the other hand, believes that it's beneath our dignity to believe in this cosmic dictator, and urges us to be free of him. The debaters discuss several different approaches to this question. Dr. Craig uses some of the classic arguments for the existence of God, such as the cosmological and teleological arguments, the argument from morality, the evidence from the life of Jesus, and the evidence of personal experience. Mr. Hitchens won't have any of it and says that religion is irrelevant to morality, and in fact is often a source of immoral actions done in the name of God. He says the world is far easier to understand and explain from a secular perspective than it is if you assume that God exists. He thinks religion is too often an excuse for men to exert power over one another. This review of the debate highlights and summarizes the important points made by the debaters, but also provides independent analysis and commentary. It strives to maintain a neutral perspective on the issue and praises and criticizes both of the debaters based on the strength of their arguments.
