OverviewDoctor Ox and Other Stories is an anthology of early work by Jules Verne. It includes the title story, ""Doctor Ox,"" one of his funniest satires; the gothic horror story ""Master Zacharius""; a story about a terrifying balloon journey; and one of Verne's first Arctic adventures, a subject and location he returned to several times in later years. The stories demonstrate Verne's unique range of interests and styles. The volume concludes with an essay by his brother Paul Verne, describing Paul's dangerous ascent of Mont Blanc. An afterword by the translator provides information about the geographical and historical context of the stories. This is the first time all of this material has appeared together in a new translation since 1874.
