Overview

From his time as a young country vet to running his own busy practice in suburban Melbourne, Hugh has treated all manner of animals and told off any number of owners. He has encountered everything from carpet snakes and circus elephants to coughing chihuahuas. Hugh has taught three generations of Australians how to care for their pets (no creature too great or small) through his weekly ABC radio show. Dr Hugh Wirth AM is both a vet and an animal welfarist. He has appeared on a weekly talkback segment on the ABC since the early 1980s and is the author of three guidebooks on pets. Hugh has held a number of professional and government appointments, and has a string of accomplishments and awards, both Australian and international. He has been an Australia Day Ambassador since 1997. He is currently the President of RSPCA Victoria. Anne Crawford was a feature writer for The Age and The Sunday Age for more than 10 years and is co-author of Doctor Hugh: My Life with Animals, Forged with Flames: A True Story of Courage and Survival, and Shadow of a Girl. Great Australian Horse Stories was published in 2013. Her most recent book, Women of Spirit, was released in May 2014. A horse-owner and horse- lover, Anne has ridden everywhere from the Victorian High Country to Patagonia to the deserts of Morocco. She lives in country Victoria where she rides a small mare with a lot of attitude called Poppy.
