Born in Pembroke Dock, he was educated at Cardiff University and Cardiff College of Education. He taught for thirty years, becoming Head of a large special school in South Wales before becoming a full-time writer. He has written over forty books, the most recent being ""The Black Chair"" (novel), ""The Wildwest Show (novel) and ""A Pembrokeshire Childhood"" (autobiography). For Accent he recently wrote ""Snapshots of Welsh History - Without the Boring Bits."" Phil also broadcasts regularly on BBC Radio 3 and 4 and presents the BBC Wales radio programme ""The Past Master."" He writes a weekly blog for BBC Wales History and regularly appears on television programmes like ""The One Show.""
