OverviewThe quick facts are these: Alzheimer's Disease is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States and is the only cause of death in the top ten in America that cannot be prevented, slowed, or cured. In 2015, dementias cost our nation an estimated $226 billion. By 2050, these costs could rise to as high as $1.1 trillion. Dementias not only affect individuals and their families, they plague us in other kinds of ways, as well. What happens when the owner of the most important company in town begins to be affected? Or a surgeon at the hospital? Or the pastor of your church? No place that involves people is immune. If dementia has not come to your pulpit, it will. It most assuredly has arrived already in your congregation. The aim of this book is to demystify dementia in order to encourage families and congregations to respond to it in meaningful, helpful, and faithful ways. This is a conversation we all need to enter. Like it or not, dealing with dementia is now part of the stewardship of our lives together. Table of ContentsReviewsPaul Rader's book Do Not Cast Me Away is a timely book about a chapter of family life that almost every family will face and certainly every church family. My wife and I went through that struggle with both of our mothers. It is a struggle that erases their memories and can trap their caregivers as well. Paul's word to the church is an invitation for the church to find room for people with Alzheimer's and their families. Room where we remember the sacrament of bread and wine and fellowship around table in all of our stages of life. I heartily endorse Do Not Cast Me Away. --Gradye Parsons, former Stated Clerk, General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church USA Dr. Paul Rader has written this book based on his invaluable experience of providing pastoral care to this unique population that he has counseled, nurtured, consoled for many years. Dr. Rader explains well the types and presenting behaviors of dementias and provides practical guidance to caregivers, including listing of supportive agencies to help caregivers to cope with irreversible and progressive dementia. He addresses the tremendous emotional impact of dementia diseases. His theological thoughts on death and dying are keenly insightful. This book can be a valuable resource beyond his own parishioners. This book provides important knowledge and guidance to caregivers, ministers, counselors, and supportive friends and family who become involved with this growing population of people who should not have to endure this journey alone. --Odacir H. Oliveira, psychologist Author InformationPaul Rader is the pastor of Northside Presbyterian Church in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
