Brilliantly captures a young woman's modern day resilience during a time when our nation was at the breaking point. A balanced approach to the complexity of the time. You gave reality to the abstract through the lens of your characters. A charming story of compelling characters set against the backdrop of the Civil War. The author does a wonderful job capturing historic details and realities of life in Maryland at that time. A romance is woven amidst the war story, making for a delightful read. Well researched and an engaging story. Recommended to all lovers of historical fiction. Lets readers take a look at the Civil War from a perspective they may never have seen before. This book is full of strong women, but takes place in a time when this kind of strength was often frowned upon (or worse). You'll find yourself rooting for the fierce, independent protagonist as she fights to make her own place in the world! Divided Loyalties is the perfect title in that this story explores the heartbreak that resulted from having friends and neighbors fight on opposites sides of the Civil War. The book also provided an interesting perspective from an immigrant family who left Ireland to avoid the famine and found themselves wanting to defend their new country. I enjoyed the bravery and strength of the main character, Maureen, who served as a nurse during the war despite her father's well-meaning but fierce objections. From CBSLocal's Five Baltimore Authors to put on your summer reading list: For your summer reading, try Tilghman's Divided Loyalties, a story placed in the Civil War era, and featuring a narrative of a battlefield nurse and the soldier who loves her as she struggles to reconcile working for the North as a girl from the South.
