Author Information

Ronald Ellerman, B.S., AAS, retired from the Fire Service as a Shift Commander with over 32 years' experience. Commander Ellerman, along with his normal firefighting duties, acted as the commanding chief officer for the Emergency Medical Service and Special Operations divisions of the fire department. He was involved in every facet of EMS and Special Operations from training, protocol and operational development, equipment specification, and purchasing. He has been a licensed Emergency Medical Technician since 1975 and an Emergency Medical Technician Instructor Coordinator since 1984 and a Diver Medical Technician instructor since 1998, developing and conducting a variety of medical training programs including Emergency Medical Technician, Advanced Prehospital Trauma Life Support, Remote Duty Medic, Tactical Emergency Medical Technician, and Diver Medic. His diving career began in the mid-1970s as a public safety and inland commercial diver. Commander Ellerman has been involved in all aspects of diving and diver training, including advanced training in response to diver emergencies. Students he has trained over the years include military, special operations, commercial off-shore, saturation, and recreational divers, along with emergency medical personnel who respond to diver emergencies. He currently works with, and supports, one of the worlds' busiest hyperbaric chambers for diving injuries located in Central America and has done so for the past 14 years. This work has allowed him to be involved in the treatment of hundreds, upon hundreds, of Miskito Indian lobster divers who have suffered severe Type II DCS injuries along with injured recreational divers. Currently, Commander Ellerman and Cornerstone Medical Services hold dual accreditation from both the National Board of Diving and Hyperbaric Medical Technology and the International Marine Contractors Association as a Diver Medic training facility and instructor. Commander Ellerman is also the author of the textbook; Diver Medical Technician: Care of the Injured Diver and the field operations guide, Remote Medic Field Guide: A Practical Approach.
