Overview

This book focuses on a significant branch of anthropogeomorphology, which is not adequately studied: the impact of transportation systems on altering earth surface processes and landforms. This book fills the gap with in-depth study on the interaction between individual modes of transport network (e.g., trail, roads, railways, waterways, airports, and tunnel) and surface hydro-geomorphology with intensive literature review, fieldwork, geo-environmental modelling, mapping, case studies, and examples from different parts of the world. On the one hand, this book also addresses the vulnerability of transport networks from climate change and critical geo-hazards like floods, landslides, etc. with case studies from the high-risk zones of India. Overall, this book promotes peaceful harmony between the transport network and its surrounding landscapes as an essential lesson for policymakers, planners, and stakeholders.

Dr Roy focuses his research interest on the interface between anthropogenic activities and changing channel and hillslope geomorphology of the tropical region. This includes field-based studies to identify micro-geomorphological processes and landforms. He is also interested in the application of GIS and remote sensing to identify the impact of human activities on landscapes. He earned a BA in geography at Burdwan Raj College, The University of Burdwan, and an MA in geography (specialised in advanced geomorphology) at The University of Burdwan (India). He earned a PhD in geography (anthropogeomorphology) at the University of Kalyani (India). He has more than 25 research publications in various Scopus and SCI indexed journals of international and national repute. Since 2013, he is deeply involved in his research: human-induced changes in river systems. He is the life member of International Association of Hydrological Sciences (IAHS); Foundation of Practicing Geographer (Kolkata, India). Indian Institute of Geomorphologists (Allahabad, India). He is an invited reviewer of different Scopus and SCI indexed journals of Springer, Elsevier, Taylor & Francis, Willy, Science Domain groups of publication. His main areas of innovative research include Transportation Geomorphology, Anthropogeomorphology.  Recently, he has published two edited books “Anthropogeomorphology of Bhagirathi-Hooghly River System in India”, published by CRC Press in October 2020, and 'Floods in the Ganga-Brahmaputra-Meghna Delta' published by Springer Geography in February 2023.
