The human carotid body shows many changes in a wide variety of diseases. Indeed, most pathologists are confronted with tumors of the carotid body, or chemdectoma; yet the broader aspects of carotid body pathology have been almost totally neglected except in animal studies and reports scattered widely in medical journals. This book gives an account of naked eye appearances at post mortem, and of the histological and ultrastructural features of the normal variants and the various pathological conditions, of the ""human"" carotid bodies. The most recent findings are gathered here; they include the content and distribution of peptides in the human carotid body and the role of the carotid body in sodium metabolism.
