Overview

Step into the glittering world of Lucy, Lady Duff Gordon--a pioneering fashion designer, Titanic survivor, and one of the most influential women of the Edwardian era. This captivating memoir offers a rare inside look at high society, fashion history, and the life of a woman far ahead of her time. In Discretions and Indiscretions, Duff Gordon recounts her extraordinary journey as founder of the House of Lucile, where she dressed royalty across Europe, the elite ""Four Hundred"" of New York, and legendary performers including Lillie Langtry, Lillian Gish, Mary Pickford, and Clara Bow. Her circle included iconic figures such as Sarah Bernhardt and Isadora Duncan, and her designs shaped both theatre and early film, including the famed Ziegfeld Follies. A trailblazer in fashion history, she invented the modern fashion show--her celebrated ""mannequin parades""--and built an international couture empire in an era when women were rarely permitted such independence. Her voice is witty, candid, and strikingly modern, offering insights into ambition, creativity, and women's evolving roles in society. Her firsthand account of surviving the Sinking of the RMS Titanic adds a powerful and deeply moving dimension to this historical memoir, revealing both personal resilience and the harsh glare of public scrutiny. Elegant, insightful, and often delightfully irreverent, this audiobook is a rich blend of fashion history, Edwardian society, and personal triumph--perfect for listeners who enjoy historical biographies, memoirs, and stories of remarkable women.
