Discovering the Nasrid Legacy

Overview

Dscovering the Nasrid Legacy It is a catalogue-book resulting from the collaboration between the painter Jacinto García Rodríguez and the historian José Miguel Reyes Mesa. The work has entailed an arduous task of research to learn about the final years of the Nasrid Kingdom and the figures of the last Granadan dynasty. Jacinto has not only carried out a pictorial effort but also the study of rigorous works and chronicles, both Muslim and Christian, in order to understand the psychological traits and the life of each of the protagonists. From the outset of this project, José Miguel Reyes has sought to give an argumentative meaning to the whole of the work. With the intention of accompanying it, short texts have been written, attempting that it should not be only legend that surrounds the work but, above all, the search for the truthfulness of the last years of the Nasrid Kingdom, the Capitulations and the exile towards the lands of North Africa. JACINTO GARCÍA RODRÍGUEZ After forty years devoted to childhood as a Primary Education teacher, and retired since 2014, today I give myself over to art, that first vocation which I now practise with freedom and which has granted me a second life. Working in the school was an authentic pleasure. When you enjoy the work with boys and girls, it is profoundly gratifying to see them grow up. With the passing of time, many become men and women who remember you with affection, the same you gave them at the time. My present occupation is painting. I am not a writer of conventional publications, but through art and the study of how the last period of the Kingdom of Granada and the end of Islam in the peninsula have been narrated, I try to offer the public an interpretation free of ideologies, hoaxes and legends. I read all kinds of sources, paying special attention to the account of the defeated. In many chroniclers there prevails a vision which presents Boabdil as a cowardly, indolent king or, from the opposite shore, as a traitor. It is time to restore to him his dignity and his vision of the future: he chose neither death nor destruction. An example that, hopefully, many present rulers would know how to imitate. This work is not an art catalogue, nor a conventional history book, but an interesting proposal for teachers, with the hope that they may not repeat the mistakes of what I was taught.
