In this entry in the Investigating the Unknown series from Enslow, students will read about the belief in past lives (reincarnation). Additionally, the book discusses the use of hypnosis and therapy to recall past lives. The book relies heavily on anecdotal evidence both for and against this theory, with little attention paid to serious scientific studies. The brief chapters cover various aspects of past lives, including a section on Dr. Helen Wambach (the authors don't mention what kind of doctor she was) who developed a system called Past Lives Therapy that used hypnosis to discover problems in past lives that led to difficulties in the patient's current life. She also used the system to test whether patients could tell the future. One patient predicted a doomsday arriving before the year 2000, an event which obviously did not take place. The book is designed well for both browsing and reading, with cartoon-like illustrations, photographs with captions, and text boxes highlighting strange accounts or definitions of unfamiliar words. A short glossary also helps with vocabulary. The Internet addresses provided in the further reading section include both sides of the issue, from How to Discover Your Past Lives to The Skeptic's Dictionary. Librarians looking for more coverage on this popular topic will find this an adequate title., Children's Literature
