Overview

If you enjoy photography, want to take better pictures, and know that your camera has many more options than just Auto, you'll get a lot out of this book. We'll go over everything you expect like image size and quality, file formats (such as jpg and RAW), focal length, shutter speed, aperture, ISO, and metering. You'll also learn about white balance, histograms, tripods, and creative filters. Most importantly, get some composition tips that can quickly improve your images. Digital Photography Basics is not a camera manual. There are too many different models available to be able to provide that level of individual detail. Topics covered here are meant to supplement your manual by giving greater detail on the results you can achieve by changing your settings. Don't waste an expensive camera by shooting in Auto! Take creative control over your camera by making critical decisions about shutter speed and aperture. Table of Contents: Introduction 1. The Lingo 2. Lens Basics 3. Getting Started 4. Exposure 5. Exposure Metering 6. Focusing 7. White Balance 8. Automatic Scene Modes 9. Creative Camera Modes 10. Get the Shot 11. Composition 12. Extras 13. Flash 14. Printing 15. Backing Up Images 16. Inspiration 17. What Settings Do I Use?

Author Information

My introduction to photography began in fifth grade when I received my first camera before a trip to Mexico. This little point-and-shoot had very few features, the negatives were tiny, and my pictures weren't that great. But I was hooked! I loved recording what I saw outside, whether at home or on family trips. My dad and grandfather encouraged me to just keep shooting. My first digital camera in 2001 was a 2.1 MP Sony that recorded onto mini CDs. Technology continues to improve and cameras with 10 times the resolution (and more!) are readily available today. While the technology has changed, the knowledge necessary to make good images remains the same. Photography is about light and vision; and giving the viewer something to experience. I started teaching others about digital photography in 2006. It's very rewarding to see my students discover what their cameras can do and the different results they get just by making a few adjustments. I've met photographers from around the country as we all strive to learn, experience different locations, and share our love of documenting the world through our images. My goal is to continue teaching, learning, and sharing photography with others.
