OverviewDietrich Bonhoeffer (1906-1945) was one of the most fascinating German Protestant theologians of the twentieth-century. This thesis attempts to shed light on a hitherto unknown facet of Dietrich Bonhoeffer's life and work with young people in church ministry and as head of one of the theological seminaries belonging to the Confessing Church. Bonhoeffer's ministry in Christian education from 1925 to 1943 is closely connected to his understanding of the Church. In the context of his time his ministry was shaped by religious education approaches such as Liberal Religious Education and Evangelical Instruction and bear a certain resemblance to the Progressive Education. Selected examples illustrate the fact that Bonhoeffer still is relevant for today's challenges facing Christian education.
