»Safeguarding the Union of Values. Options for Action for the European Union to Protect the Common Values of Art. 2 TEU«: The formation of autocratic governments in EU member states poses the question how the Union can react. This thesis analyzes the preventive and repressive options for action. It shows that the existing procedures have deficiencies and that the EU’s power to create new ones is limited. Nevertheless, the author shows small rooms of improvement within the existing treaties.

Author Information

Claudia Hainthaler studied law at the University of Würzburg from 2012 to 2017 with a focus on »Politics, Government and Administration« and European law as an accompanying course. After her First States Exam in 2017, she worked as a research assistant at the Chair of Public Law and European Law of Prof. Dr. Markus Ludwigs at the University of Würzburg until 2020 and received her doctorate there in 2023. She did her legal traineeship from 2021 to 2023 in the Higher Regional Court District of Hamm, which included a stage at the Rule of Law Program of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation for the Middle East and North Africa in Beirut, Lebanon.
