Overview

Die kontinuierliche Entwicklung und Produktion von Grabreliefs auf der Insel begann ca. Ende des 7. Jhs. v. Chr. und reichte bis ins 3. Jh. n. Chr. mit von Beginn an eigenem Charakter. Die charakteristischen Formen und Typen sowie der eigenwillige Stil erfordern eine unabhangige Annaherung, weshalb diese Grabreliefs nicht nur in Verbindung zu ihren griechischen Gegenstucken betrachtet werden sollten. Die kyprischen Bildhauer entwickelten im Laufe der Jahrhunderte ihre eigene Tradition, wobei sie ununterbrochen Einflusse benachbarter Kulturlandschaften aufnahmen.Diese Dissertation ist die erste ihrer Art, welche ausfuhrlich die Grabreliefs Zyperns von der archaischen bis zu der romischen Zeit untersucht und das auf verschiedene Museen der Welt verteilte, zum Teil unpublizierte, Material zusammenfasst. Einer der wesentlichen Schwerpunkte ist die Forschung im Bereich der Akkulturation: Zypern als Begegnungszentrum der verschiedenen Kulturen des ostlichen Mittelmeerraumes, in welchem sich die kyprische Tradition und Identitat entfaltet. Mit dieser Forschungsarbeit wurde ein Beitrag zur Archaologie Zyperns, speziell auf dem bisher recht unerforschten Gebiet der Skulpturen, geleistet.The continuous development and production of grave reliefs on the island began ca. at the end of the 7th century B.C. and continued well into the 3rd century A.D., exhibiting its own character from the beginning. Their characteristic forms and types as well as their individual style, require an independent approach, which is therefore the reason that these grave reliefs should not only be examined in relation to their Greek counterparts. Over the centuries Cypriote sculptors developed their own tradition, continuously assimilating influences from neighbouring cultural landscapes.This dissertation is the first of its kind, which analyzes in detail the grave reliefs of Cyprus from the Archaic to the Roman period and summarizes the partly unpublished material curated in several museums throughout the world. One of the major focuses is the research in the field of acculturation: Cyprus as a crossroad of different cultures from the eastern Mediterranean area, in which the Cypriote tradition and identity is cultivated. This work constitutes a significant contribution to Cypriote archaeology, specifically in the field of sculpture, which has remained thus far considerably uninvestigated.
