The series History of Ancient Sculpture has quickly turned into a standard work. This fourth volume deals with Roman sculpture. Whereas in the beginning, we only find copies of Greek models, from the Late Republic onwards, Roman sculpture was dominated more and more by statues of rulers and private citizens, or by historical reliefs. The authors of this volume, renowned experts on Ancient sculpture under the guidance of the Liebieghaus Museum of Ancient Sculpture at Frankfurt am Main, describe and explain the development of sculptural forms from the Republic until the High Imperial Period.
