English summary: The region around Trier is one of the most important regions for Roman culture in Germany, and that is not only because of the monumental legacy of the city, but also because of the pronounced Roman settlement and cultivation of the land around Trier. During the Roman imperial period, an extensive landscape of villas was developed around Trier, whose economic development was characterized by typological diversity, temporal continuity, and economic prosperity. Despite the significant archeological potential of the region, research into the local, rural settlements has left much to be desired until now. In this study, Stephan Seiler follows up questions concerning the factors that served as a basis for the development of villas, what the villas produced, and which agricultural practices led to this prosperous cultivated landscape. The investigation suggests a synthesis between the standard research about the rural settlement of Trier area during the period of the Roman Empire with new questions, which have arisen recently with regard to the archeological study of the villas as well as research into the historical economy of the region. The point of departure is the archeological findings from the excavation of the villas in the area, which are, for the first time, compiled and summarized in a catalog volume. Through the combination of empiricism and theory, the environmental and infrastructural requirements for, as well as the agricultural development of, the prospering villa-economy in the area are reconstructed. The chronological range moves between the first century BCE and the end of the Roman settlement in the 5th century CE. German description: Der Raum Trier ist eine der bedeutendsten romischen Kulturlandschaften Deutschlands, und das nicht nur wegen der monumentalen Hinterlassenschaften der Stadt, sondern auch aufgrund der ausgepragten Besiedlung und Kultivierung des Trierer Landes. Hier bildete sich wahrend der romischen Kaiserzeit eine reiche Villenlandschaft heraus, deren wirtschaftliche Entwicklung sich durch typologische Vielfalt, zeitliche Kontinuitat und okonomische Prosperitat auszeichnete. Trotz dieses grossen Potenzials ist in der archaologischen Forschung die Analyse der landlichen Besiedlung der Gegend bislang weitestgehend ein Desiderat geblieben. Stephan Seiler geht den Fragen nach, welche Faktoren die Basis der Villenbesiedlung bildeten, was erwirtschaftet wurde und welcher agrarwirtschaftliche Entwicklungsprozess zu dieser prosperierenden Kulturlandschaft fuhrte. Die Untersuchung bildet eine Synthese aus der bisherigen Forschung zur landlichen Besiedlung des Trierer Landes wahrend der romischen Kaiserzeit und neuen Fragestellungen, die wahrend der letzten Jahre in der archaologischen Villen- und der historischen Wirtschaftsforschung entwickelt wurden. Ausgangspunkt ist der archaologische Villenbefund des Trierer Landes, der erstmals zusammenfassend in einem Katalogband zusammengestellt wurde. Durch die Verknupfung von Empirie und Theorie werden die naturraumlichen und infrastrukturellen Voraussetzungen sowie die agrarokonomische Entwicklung der prosperierenden Villenwirtschaft der Gegend rekonstruiert. Der zeitliche Rahmen bewegt sich zwischen dem ersten vorchristlichen Jahrhundert und dem Ende der romischen Besiedlung im 5. Jahrhundert n.Chr.
