Overview

Pushed to breaking point, Cara Burrows abandons her home and family and escapes to a five-star spa resort she can't afford. Late at night, exhausted and desperate, she lets herself into her hotel room and is shocked to find it already occupied - by a man and a teenage girl. A simple mistake on the part of the hotel receptionist - but Cara's fear intensifies when she works out that the girl she saw alive and well in the hotel room is someone she can't possibly have seen: the most famous murder victim in the country, Melody Chapa, whose parents are serving life sentences for her murder. Cara doesn't know what to trust: everything she's read and heard about the case, or the evidence of her own eyes. Did she really see Melody? And is she prepared to ask herself that question and answer it honestly if it means risking her own life?

A top-notch page-turner full of intrigue and unforgettable characters - Sophie Hannah at her absolute best. Liz Nugent Uber-mystery writer Sophie Hannah lays out a deliciously inventive premise in her new standalone: What would happen if an ordinary woman turned the key on the wrong hotel room door at a ritzy American spa and stepped smack into a famous old case of a missing girl? Hannah lures in the reader with her usual sneaky prowess ... you think you know what's going on, but you don't. Imaginative plotting and tricky characters whip you around until you just give up figuring out the end and hang on. If you're looking for a terrific crime thriller for your next relaxing escape, this is it (but you might want to double-check your room number first). Julia Heaberlin An intriguing premise, a brilliant setting and a conclusion that will haunt you - Did You See Melody is utterly addictive. Emma Kavanagh A fast paced, exhilarating read with a fantastic central plot that keeps you guessing right till the end. Kate Hamer Did You See Melody? is Sophie Hannah at her very best. Twisty as a corkscrew and totally entertaining, it is the definition of a page turner - I read it in one day. Put everything on hold and pick up this book now. Brilliant Jenny Blackhurst Beautifully plotted, Did You See Melody? begins with an intriguing premise and pulls you through the story with breath-taking twists from that moment on...I loved everything about this novel, from the setting to the witty and vivid characters to the immensely satisfying ending. I will be recommending this one to everyone - and you will, too Elizabeth Haynes

Postmodernism and crime fiction are not easy bedfellows, and it takes a master (or mistress) of the genre to balance the clever-cleverness of the meta-text with the skill needed to build and maintain suspense. In A GAME FOR ALL THE FAMILY Hannah manages to balance postmodern playfulness with a strong narrative drive to produce a complex, compelling brain-teaser . . . Hannah - like Patricia Highsmith and Ruth Rendell before her - is an expert at exploring the delicate line between the ordinary and the monstrous, yet her everyday tales of warped psychology are laced with humour. - Independent on A GAME FOR ALL THE FAMILY A beguiling and intricate standalone crime thriller. - Daily Mail on A GAME FOR ALL THE A fabulously creepy standalone. - Bookseller on A GAME FOR ALL THE FAMILY The language in Sophie Hannah's novels is so precise and elegantly phrased. More noteworthy, perhaps, is her sure grasp of psychology - particularly that of her beleaguered heroines, often thrown into chaos by the effects of crime or a catastrophic misjudgement on their own part - Financial Times on A GAME FOR ALL THE FAMILY No one writes twisted, suspenseful novels quite like Sophie Hannah . . . unpredictable, unputdownable and unlike anything else you've read before - Liane Moriarty, author of THE HUSBAND'S SECRET For those who demand emotional intelligence and literary verve from their thrillers, Sophie Hannah is the writer of choice - Guardian on A GAME FOR ALL THE FAMILY [One] of the great unmissables of the genre - intelligent, classy and with a wonderfully gothic imagination - The Times Popular domestic suspense author SophieHannah has returned with another literate tale full of intrigue and vivid characters. - Canberra Weekly
