Overview

This dictionary contains more than 4000 terms corresponding to the vocabulary currently used in the fields of seismic prospecting. In addition to the seismic vocabulary, it includes terms relating to the neighboring fields of geology, seismology, topography and data processing. It was compiled by French, British and U.S. specialists in geophysics within the framework of the Technical Committee of the French Oil and Gas Industry Association. The authors are from different companies, and they have tried to impart a degree of rigour to a vocabulary that is often confused, since the same term may have several meanings, and the same concept may be designated by several terms according to what each person is accustomed to doing. The authors of this dictionary tried to clarify this situation and also indicated incorrect uses that should be avoided.
