A little more than half a century ago, there was no real way to use multiple choice questions to gauge someone's suitability to use English with native fluency in written and verbal communication. It was all essays and personal interviews in those days; but this level of engagement was difficult to sustain as more and more people started applying to the best universities in the world. When the college admission tests at undergraduate level (SAT) and graduate level (GRE, GMAT) were introduced, they changed the game as far as English test prep was concerned for ever. No longer did young bright people have to worry only about their writing skills as a whole, but they also had to strengthen the basics, and build up a solid vocabulary of words that were used in scholarly and formal professional contexts. The total number of unique words you need to know to ace all these tests is relatively small: 3000 should do the trick. The only problem is that you need to cram this learning into a short period of time: 6-12 months. This is not always easy.
