Multe sensuri conotative sunt reprezentate de vocative şi imperative. Interjecţiile sunt părţi de vorbire care nu denumesc, şi deci nu au sensuri denotative, ci doar sensuri afective, care sugerează stări sufleteşti şi volitive. Onomatopeele sunt ''cuvinte-motivate'', care prin elementele lor sonore imită zgomote din natură. Acestea sunt elemente lingvistice primare, anterioare construcţiei Turnului Babel, 'căci până atunci toți vorbeau o singură limbă'6 The Lord said, ""If as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them.7 Come, let us go down and confuse their language so they will not understand each other.""
