Overview

This book presents distinctive perspectives and voices concerning the nature, utility, and limitations of science and technology in national security, as well as outlining the nature of science and technology's interdependency with military operations. These dialogues are particularly timely during this period of transition for the US military in which these implicit ideas are molding the Army Futures Command and similar other service agencies. The design decisions being made to equip, train, educate, deploy, and lead the future force need wisdom from experienced scientists, engineers, and innovators. Author Information

Bruce J. West is the Senior Scientist Mathematics (ST retired) in the Office of the Director of the Army Research Office, USA, and holds a PhD in Physics from the University of Rochester. Over his 50 year career, he has published over 20 books, 26 book chapters, and over 300 scientific articles. He is the recipient of the US Army's Samuel S. Wilks Memorial Award, the Presidential Meritorious Rank Award, and the Presidential Distinguished Rank Award. He is a Fellow of the American Physical Society and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He and co-author Chris Arney recently published Nonsimplicty: The Warrior's Way.Chris Arney is a Professor (Emeritus) of the United States Military Academy, where he taught mathematics, network science, operations research, and cybersecurity for over 27 years. He served in the US Army for 30 years, with six years as Head of the Department of Mathematical Sciences before retiring as a Brigadier General. He received his PhD in Mathematics and Master's in Computer Science from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, USA. After his military service, he served as a Division Chief at the Army Research Office. His research focuses on pursuit-evasion models, cooperative systems, networks, artificial intelligence, and natural language processing. Kira Hutchinson is an intelligence specialist on the Intelligence Support Activity staff at the US Army's Training and Doctrine Command. She holds a PhD in Organic Chemistry from the University of California at Irvine, and serves as the Director of Critical Thinking at TRADOC. Her background is developing Red Team expertise in the Deployable Force Protection (DFP) Technology Initiative and in the G2 Futures' initiative (Deep Red) to determine how TRADOC should best shape the US Army's future force.
