Overview

The Dexter comes from the Kerry area of Ireland, which is in the southwest. They used to belong to small landowners there. The first Dexters lived in Ireland, where there were few places to live and few things to eat and sleep on.This made them strong and resourceful, which are qualities we look for in the breed today.More than 200 Dexter cattle came to the United States for the first time between 1905 and 1915.Because these original herds have grown, there are now Dexters in almost every state in the U.S.One of the last breeds of cattle in the world that can be used for beef, milk, and work is the Dexter. They are still used on farms and ranches in the United States.Dexters are more likely to become pregnant than to have trouble giving birth.People say that Dexter bulls have calm personalities and are easy to handle. Most Dexter cows are good mothers, and their natural instinct to take care of their young makes them very valuable in seed stock operations.Dexters are either black, red, or brown. Most cows are solid colors, but some have white on their udders or behind their umbilicus. There shouldn't be too much white, too many spots, or too much brindling on the body.Dexters used to be a breed of dog with horns.Their horns are pretty, about the size of a hand, and move back and forth. They have black tips. Some people who own Dexters with horns keep the horns, while others take them off.
