He joined the Port and Harbour Research Institute in 1974, directly after graduating from the University of Tokyo. His main research interest is geotechnical earthquake engineering in waterfront areas. From 2003 to 2005, he served as the convener of a working group ISO/TC98/SC3/WG10 drafting International Standard ISO23469: Seismic actions for designing geotechnical works. He has received a number of awards, including the 1994 Prakash Award, USA, two awards from the Japan Geotechnical Society, and two awards from the JSCE.
