OverviewThe first research based curriculum designed to instruct language arts and math, as well as all life skill domains to those with severe or multiple disabilities while utilizing the RICS communication system. DETMAR, patent pending, is a systematic approach to instructing students by submerging their senses through continuous communication and hands on experiences. It is the first curriculum to include detailed, step by step directions, for all students, including those with varying types of disabilities. DETMAR is an innovative approach to learning since it is directed education through modeling and repetition. DETMAR is recommended for all students in the following categories: multiple disabilities severe disabilities grade school with moderate disabilities English language learners preschool In addition, DETMAR utilizes RICS, in every aspect of the program to ensure consistency, aid in comprehension, and increase communication. RICS, Real Image Communication System, is a communication technique where real images are used as an aid to foster language. This is preferable to a drawing, because the students no longer have to have the cognitive ability to understand that those lines and colors represent an object. The students utilize real images instead of abstract drawings. The purpose of DETMAR is to provide a curriculum that can be used from preschool to adults, especially those with severe or multiple disabilities, to instruct life skills including reading and simple mathematical concepts. Due to the nature of their disabilities, it takes a long time for these students to learn a concept. In order for these students to be successful, they require a program that submerges their senses through continuous communication and hands on experiences. In addition, they require consistent, multiple interactions on basic concepts daily throughout the year. That is what DETMAR ensures. Table of ContentsReviewsAuthor InformationAlison Nguyen received her BA of Science from Temple University and received her Master's in Distance Learning from University of Phoenix. She has an additional 60 credits, at the Master's level, dealing with various areas of the educational field. She also received training in PECS and sign language. After receiving her BA of Science from Temple University, Alison became a special education teacher for the School District of Philadelphia in March 2002. From March 2002 to June 2002 she was a Resource Room teacher for grades kindergarten through sixth grade. Beginning in September 2002, she was a self-contained learning support teacher for eighth grade and was responsible for finding appropriate textbooks and creating an instructional program. For the following two years, beginning in September 2003, she was a self-contained learning support teacher for sixth grade and was again responsible for finding appropriate textbooks and creating a new instructional program for sixth grade. In September 2005, she was the itinerant teacher for seventh grade. However, due to an influx of students, she was changed to a push-in teacher for eighth grade. She was the first push-in teacher for the school and had to create a cohesive instructional team with reluctant regular education teachers who never co-taught before. In 2006, she was the push-in teacher for seventh grade. From 2007 to the present, she is the multiple disabilities teacher for sixth, seventh, and eighth grade. While teaching in the multiple disabilities setting, there were no instructional programs that met the needs of all of her students. She became convinced that, with the right instruction, her students could learn to read and learn simple mathematical concepts. For the next six years, she experimented with different methods and ideas until she found one that enabled her students to learn how to read and simple mathematical concepts. In addition, she wrote 31 books to aid her students' learning. Thus, in 2013, D E T M A R was born. Tab Content 6Author Website:Countries AvailableAll regions |
