Determination: The Story of a Black Woman Growing Up and Becoming a Lt. Colonel in the United States Air Force from 1949 - 1970

Overview

As the granddughter of a slave growing up during the 1920's and 1930's, Jane Cotton was challenged by both experiences and societal, and even religious, expectations that often made her think of giving up on developing her intellect and striving to pursue the paths that would lead her to the kind of work that she felt called to do. At age 92, she recounts what it was like growing up and then becoming a military leader. At the time, social mores and some religious teachings indicated it was not suitable or proper for women to be in positions where they had any power and authority, and this was especially evident in positions where women would be supervising men and even more evident when those positions involved women of color. Determination is the remarkable story of a black woman growing up in the first half of the 20th century and then going on to becoma a Lt. Colonel in the United States Air Force from 1949 - 1970. Rich in detail, the book paints an important picture of life during those times as well as teaching all of us what true determination can lead to. Despite pressures, something deep inside her told her that she was created a whole being with the potential to become a responsible, educated, and independent person. Her story, punctuated with her poems and photos, will inspire young people and particularly young girls to have the determination to develop physically and intellectually to reach their full potential and become good citizens who take pride in themselves and their accomplishments. Jane Cotton shares this piece of wisdom -- when all persons, regardless of race, sex, or circumstances of birth, are encouraged and presented with opportunities to develop so they realize their abilities, the world becomes a better place.
