Overview

Social trust is the key to, indeed the very success formula for, well-functioning and harmonious societies like the Norwegian one, both researchers and politicians claim. But can there be too much trust in a society? Can trust make us dull and naive? Does Norwegians' great, almost boundless trust in authorities and state institutions leave the way open for corruption, abuse of power and national security threats - and for us Norwegians to a large extent tolerating incompetence? Yes, claim Nina Witoszek and Eva Joly, who in this book deal with what they call Norwegian trust pathologies. The authors show how the Norwegian trust has backfired on us, and has been abused by, among others, Norwegian peace brokers, tax lawyers, business leaders, politicians and the state oil company Equinor. They recognize that trust is an important social good. But it must be accompanied by common sense.

Author Information

"Eva Joly is a Norwegian-French lawyer and politician, particularly known for her anti-corruption work and environmental commitment. She has previously been a presidential candidate for the Greens in France, a member of the European Parliament for ten years and profiled the investigating judge in a large number of corruption cases. In addition, she has led anti-corruption work for, among others, the Icelandic and Norwegian governments, Norad and the UN. She now works as a lawyer with her own practice in Paris, and still holds several international positions related to combating economic crime and tax evasion. Joly has written several best-selling books, both for French and Norwegian publishers. Nina Witoszek is a Polish-Irish-Norwegian academic and author, now a senior researcher at the Center for Development and Environment (SUM) at the University of Oslo (UiO). She has a PhD in comparative politics and has previously worked as a researcher and lecturer at the universities of Galway (Ireland), Uppsala (Sweden), Cambridge and Oxford (England) and at the European Institute in Florence (Italy). In addition to extensive non-fiction writing, Witoszek has published a number of novels (under the pseudonym Nina FitzPatrick) and several collections of essays. She is also a prominent social debater and columnist in the Norwegian media. In 2005, she received the Fritt Ord prize because she ""sharply and well-formulated conveyed Eastern European experiences into the Norwegian debate and challenged Norwegian standard perceptions""."
