Destruction of Urban Trees: Ignored Environmental Problem

Overview

In last few years we are witnessing that many large trees in towns and villages are cut under various excuses which are often only excuses. From alleged danger to bypassers, disease, building or replacing of infrastructure, roots lifting pavement, ... Also often when roads are repaired or new cables or pipes put, it is not paid attention to roots of trees causing irreparable damage which later cause dieing of trees or falling during storms which would not happen if roots are intact. Also often works around public trees are conducted by unqualified and uninterested municipal employees who just want to finish job they are given without thinking about possible damage to trees and environment. Those harmful practices caused significant loss of urban trees which have negative effects. In summer especialy those are visible because there is no shadow so people are forced to stay inside during hottest parts of day. Also temperatures of asphalt and concrete without protection of trees are rising causing significantly higher temperatures and even health danger to sensible individuals and also to dogs who can get injuries from burning asphalt. To tackle complains from citizens, municipal authorities often organise replanting actions to partialy replace lost trees but those actions are insufficient and wrongly done. Firstly, planting of trees on locations of those which previously existed is avoided because they want trees further away from underground cables, pipes and pavement. So trees are planted in unused areas where they don't offer shadow to citizens and objects. Also for replanting are used weak saplings with trimmed roots which prevent them to developing properly and decades could pass before they grow enough to at least partialy replace previous trees which sometimes existed even before urbanisation of area.
