Overview

The free-to-play multiplayer first-person shooter video game Destiny 2 was created by Bungie. It is also known as Destiny 2: New Light and Destiny: Guardians in Korea. For PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Microsoft Windows, it was first made available as a pay-to-play title in 2017. On October 1, 2019, the game under the name New Light became free-to-play and adopted the games as a service business model. The game was subsequently released on Stadia the following month, then on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S platforms in December 2020. Prior to December 31, 2018, Bungie had the publishing rights to the series; Activision had previously published the game. It is a follow-up to 2014's Destiny and its later expansions. The game's online shared-world setting, which incorporates aspects of role-playing games, is set in a mythic science fiction universe. Player versus environment (PvE) and player versus player (PvP) game types are used to split activities in Destiny 2 much like the original. Three-player strikes, dungeons, and six-player raids are available in PvE in addition to standard narrative objectives. Each location also has a free roam patrol mode that offers additional activities and public events not included in the original. Exploration of the locations and interactions with non-player characters (NPCs) are prioritized in these activities; in the original Destiny, NPCs were limited to social settings. Along with the standard deathmatch game types, PvP offers objective-based variations.
