Destination Stewardship: Drive Sustainability, Economic Renewal, and Cultural Integrity

Overview

Tourism is often seen as a driver of economic growth, but it can also be a force for environmental harm, cultural erosion and economic inequity. Destinations across the world are now facing the consequences of unmanaged tourism growth, and businesses are looking for strategic, long-term solutions. Destination Stewardship presents a transformative framework for reimagining tourism that balances economic vitality with environmental preservation and cultural integrity. Drawing on her extensive experience as an award-winning travel journalist and global tourism leader, author Tonya Fitzpatrick delivers a comprehensive guide that challenges senior-level industry professionals to move beyond traditional growth metrics toward a more holistic approach to destination management. Featuring exclusive insights from global tourism leaders-including interviews with brand leaders of UNWTO, CREST and Sustainable Travel International, Destination Stewardship provides actionable frameworks for implementing sustainable tourism models that generate economic benefits while preserving local cultures and natural environments.

Reviews

""This book is a timely reflection and reminder on the value of stewardship in communities, especially through the spaces of hospitality and tourism that are so closely connected to care, service, and people, and thereby can serve as the highest conduits and custodians of culture in the economic system, reminding us to keep humanity, balance, and kindness at the core of all we do."" * Dr. Harbeen Arora, Founder, G100 | Women Economic Forum * ""With textbook precision, Tonya Fitzpatrick has captured the movement to transform tourism into an engine of enhancement rather than destruction. In Destination Stewardship, she asks the right questions and explains how tourist spots around the world are coming up with answers."" * Elizabeth Becker, Author of Overbooked * ""Tonya's work on Destination Stewardship takes a truly holistic view-showing that meaningful change comes not from a single action, but from many working in harmony. As both a journalist and a storyteller, she understands that facts and figures alone don't inspire stewardship. It's the narratives that capture our imaginations and move us to act, and this book delivers both with clarity and purpose."" * Amy Alipio, award-winning writer and editor, former Managing Editor, National Geographic Travel * ""At a moment when global tourism stands at a tipping point, Destination Stewardship provides a much-needed roadmap for shifting from growth-focused models to stewardship-driven approaches that sustain places and communities over the long term. With more than 25 years of experience as an academic and advisor in this space, I see this book as a resource for scholars, policymakers, and industry leaders committed to shaping a more responsible tourism future."" * Dr. Kristin Lamoureux, Director, Hospitality and Tourism Graduate Program, Virginia Tech University * "" At a moment when the world is rethinking how we engage with places and people, Destination Stewardship offers a clear and compelling path forward. Tonya Fitzpatrick brings together global insight, practical wisdom, and moral clarity to show how stewardship can transform travel into a force for resilience and shared benefit. This is leadership thinking for a changing world."" * Richard Wiese, President, The Explorers Club * ""Laced with real-world examples and how-tos, this book is must-read for anyone managing tourism's impact on the places we visit and live in."" * Jonathan Tourtellot, CEO, Destination Stewardship Center * ""The democratization of travel has brought undeniable benefits, but it has also created new pressures that require destinations to confront the limits of the ""more is better"" assumption. Destination Stewardship offers a timely and practical reframing of tourism success, shifting the focus from volume-driven growth to the long-term care of places, communities, and the experiences they host. This book equips destination leaders with the tools needed to move from promotion to stewardship and navigate tourism's next chapter."" * Dan McCole, Ph.D., MBA, Professor of Community Sustainability at Michigan State University and President, Tourism Industry Coalition of Michigan * ""In New Orleans, we understand that being a globally loved destination carries real responsibility. In Destination Stewardship, Tonya Fitzpatrick makes a compelling case that long-term success depends on protecting culture, prioritizing residents, and governing with intention. This is an important and timely contribution to the future of travel."" * Walt Leger III, President and CEO, New Orleans & Company * ""Destination Stewardship reframes tourism from an extractive and growth-driven paradigm toward one grounded in care, shared responsibility, and community-centered leadership. Drawing on real-world examples, it offers a holistic framework for meaningful partnerships and equitable governance, charting a future where all who host, shape, and experience tourism see themselves as stewards of the places they love."" * Vincie Ho, Ph.D., Founder and Executive Director, RISE Travel Institute; Adjunct Faculty, Antioch University *
